Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held bilateral discussions with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, this morning (12) during a brief visit to the island.
According to official sources, the primary focus of the meeting was to assess Sri Lanka’s post-disaster recovery efforts following Cyclone Dittva and to convey details regarding humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to be extended by the Chinese government.
The discussions also touched on broader aspects of Sri Lanka–China relations, reaffirming Beijing’s continued support for Sri Lanka during its recovery phase and its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Sri Lanka in the early hours of today, accompanied by a delegation of 17 senior officials from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit took place while the Chinese Foreign Minister was returning to China after concluding an official tour of South Africa.
Despite the short duration of the visit, the Chinese delegation engaged in high-level diplomatic engagements before departing Sri Lanka at approximately 10.30 a.m. today.
Observers note that the visit underscores China’s sustained diplomatic engagement with Sri Lanka and its ongoing role in regional cooperation, disaster response, and development assistance.
