Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has criticised the government’s proposed education reforms, urging that any changes must be tailored to the needs of the nation rather than aligned with the political agenda of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
Addressing the media, Mr. Rajapaksa said the President’s recent comments suggest the reforms may be incompatible with local needs and are being pursued despite this mismatch. He emphasised that while both the SLPP and the public acknowledge the need for improvements in the education system and state mechanisms, reforms should be suitable and necessary for the country, not dictated by JVP policies.
Mr. Rajapaksa further appealed to the President to avoid interference in the nation’s religion and cultural values through the reform process. He warned that implementing reforms that do not reflect Sri Lanka’s realities could be detrimental and that the government must take responsibility for the consequences of such decisions.
His remarks come amid wider debate over the government’s education reform programme, which has drawn both support and criticism from various stakeholders across the country.
