Sri Lanka’s Central Bank Governor, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, has indicated that the targets agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may need to be revised due to the economic impact of the recent Dithwa cyclone.
Speaking on Derana TV’s 360 program on Monday evening (12), Dr. Weerasinghe said that the government and the IMF will hold discussions in the near future to address the necessary adjustments. He emphasized that IMF programs are implemented based on the prevailing conditions in the country, and any unforeseen events, such as natural disasters, can require recalibration of targets and policies.
He added that while the adjustments may affect the current fiscal year, a full review will be conducted before finalizing targets for the next period. According to Dr. Weerasinghe, sufficient time will be allowed to complete the review, similar to the flexibility exercised during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring debt sustainability and proper allocation of additional emergency expenditures.
This move highlights Sri Lanka’s proactive approach in working with international financial institutions to accommodate unforeseen economic shocks, while maintaining a focus on fiscal responsibility and program compliance.
