Colombo / Kandy — Ranil Wickremesinghe, the former President of Sri Lanka, has announced that he is no longer taking part in active political life. The statement came during his visit to Kandy today (23 January), where he called on senior Buddhist clergy for blessings and spoke about the current political situation in the country.

Mr. Wickremesinghe visited the Mahanayaka of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero, and then the Mahanayaka of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, marking a significant public appearance during which he emphasized stepping back from frontline politics.

During discussions with the Maha Nayaka Theros, the former president touched on the broader political environment in Sri Lanka — a country that has seen significant political shifts in recent years after years of economic challenges and leadership changes.
