Ranil Says He Is No Longer Engaged in Active Politics

Colombo / Kandy — Ranil Wickremesinghe, the former President of Sri Lanka, has announced that he is no longer taking part in active political life. The statement came during his visit to Kandy today (23 January), where he called on senior Buddhist clergy for blessings and spoke about the current political situation in the country.

Mr. Wickremesinghe visited the Mahanayaka of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero, and then the Mahanayaka of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, marking a significant public appearance during which he emphasized stepping back from frontline politics.

During discussions with the Maha Nayaka Theros, the former president touched on the broader political environment in Sri Lanka — a country that has seen significant political shifts in recent years after years of economic challenges and leadership changes. Analysts say his decision may signal a consolidation of newer political forces and a changing phase for established political leaders.

Mr. Wickremesinghe’s public life has spanned several decades, including leadership roles in government and parliament. His recent statement would mark a symbolic transition away from active engagement, though political commentators note that his influence on party affairs could continue in advisory ways.

The announcement comes at a time when Sri Lankan politics is evolving under new leadership, and many observers are watching closely how former leaders will reposition themselves in the changing landscape.
