Colombo, February 15, 2026 – The Sri Lankan Government has yet to publicly clarify its position on a controversial proposal to import 1,775 double cab utility vehicles — a plan that has drawn criticism from Opposition politicians and civil society alike.
The proposal, floated as part of the 2026 Budget and state procurement plans, would see hundreds of four-wheel-drive double cab pickups brought into the country ostensibly to bolster the official vehicle fleet. The government’s silence on details such as procurement rationale, cost estimates, and the intended beneficiaries has added to public concern.
Opposition figures have flagged the plan as expensive and unnecessary, questioning why such a large import is needed when many existing vehicles show high maintenance costs, and whether the move adheres to standard procurement transparency and competitive bidding rules. Some MPs from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have also debated whether to accept vehicles allocated to them under the proposal.
Critics say a decision to proceed without clear explanation undermines fiscal responsibility, especially in a period where public spending and import bills remain under scrutiny.
