Colombo, January 18, 2026 – A rare and enormous natural purple star sapphire called the “Star of Pure Land” has been formally entered into the global record books as the largest documented gemstone of its kind in the world.
The gemstone weighs a remarkable 3,563 carats and displays a striking six-ray star pattern (asterism) — an optical effect caused by aligned mineral inclusions within the stone — making it both scientifically fascinating and visually extraordinary.
The discovery was officially presented in Colombo, where gem specialists confirmed its uniqueness and certification by leading laboratories. The sapphire’s reported value is at least USD 300 million, with some valuations suggested to be even higher due to its rarity, size, colour and clarity.
Found in Rathnapura, Sri Lanka’s famed “city of gems,” the stone has drawn significant attention from gemologists, collectors, and the global jewellery community. Owners have chosen to remain anonymous for security reasons, and discussions about its future — whether sale, display or institutional stewardship — are ongoing.
