BASL members decide not to appear in court cases tomorrow in solidarity move

Colombo, February 15, 2026 – In a significant show of protest and solidarity, members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) have unanimously decided not to appear for court hearings across the country tomorrow. The decision was taken at a special general meeting held today with widespread participation from lawyers affiliated with the association.

The meeting, convened in response to recent legal and political developments perceived as challenging to the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, drew members from various provinces. Senior BASL officials emphasised that the collective action is intended to send a strong message about the need to uphold constitutional rights and ensure that justice is administered without undue pressure or interference.

According to the resolution passed at the session, BASL members will refrain from attending all scheduled hearings and legal proceedings tomorrow, unless specifically directed by the courts or agreed upon by the association’s leadership. Participants say the move aims to spotlight ongoing concerns over judicial independence and the protection of legal professionals in the current climate.

The Bar Association has also pledged to continue consultations with legal bodies, civil society groups and stakeholders in the justice sector to determine further collective action if necessary. Lawyers present at the meeting stressed that the decision was made after careful deliberation and reflects growing unease among legal practitioners about recent pressures affecting the legal system.

In the coming days, BASL is expected to communicate detailed guidelines to its members regarding the implementation of tomorrow’s absence from court and any subsequent advocacy steps.
