Sri Lanka Among Worst Impacted Asia-Pacific Nations Due to West Asia Conflict – UN Report

A recent report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has identified Sri Lanka as one of the most vulnerable countries in the Asia-Pacific region following the escalation of the conflict in West Asia (Middle East).

Key Findings of the Report:

  • Energy Vulnerability: As a country heavily dependent on imported fuel, Sri Lanka faces severe economic strain due to fluctuations in global oil prices and supply chain disruptions caused by the closure of strategic maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Impact on Remittances: The conflict poses a significant threat to the safety of Sri Lankan migrant workers in the Middle East. Any disruption in this sector could drastically reduce the foreign exchange inflows that are vital for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.
  • Tourism Downturn: Rising aviation fuel costs and general regional instability are expected to deter international tourists, potentially slowing down the growth of the tourism sector.
  • Inflationary Pressure: The UNDP warns that increased logistical costs will likely translate into higher prices for essential goods, making inflation management a difficult task for policymakers.

The report emphasizes that along with Sri Lanka, nations like the Maldives, Pakistan, and Vietnam are also on the frontlines of this economic fallout, requiring urgent strategic interventions to mitigate the damage.
