President Donald Trump has announced that the current ceasefire with Iran may not be extended beyond this Wednesday if a comprehensive agreement is not reached. While Trump claimed that Iran has agreed to ship out its stockpiles of enriched uranium, Iranian officials swiftly debunked the statement, calling it “false” and reaffirming their stance on nuclear sovereignty.
The Blockade and Control Over the Strait
The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open if the U.S. continues its aggressive naval blockade of Iranian ports. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), 21 vessels attempting to enter or exit Iranian waters have been forced to turn back under U.S. orders since the blockade began on April 13.
In a rare positive development amidst the tension, the ‘Celestyal Discovery’ became the first passenger ship to successfully transit the Strait since the onset of the conflict.
Global Supply Chain Disruption
The crisis is sending shockwaves through the global economy:
- China: Raw material costs for Chinese factories have surged by approximately 25% due to supply chain delays.
- Australia: Facing a severe fuel shortage, the Australian government has temporarily relaxed fuel quality standards to manage the dwindling supply.
While a 10-day truce between Israel and Lebanon has allowed thousands of displaced people to return to their homes, analysts warn that the global energy market will remain volatile as long as the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz continues.
